When to go. Runs year-round. The cultural triangle is at its hottest April to June, so on those departures we start before sunrise and rest through the afternoon.

  1. Day 1

    Airport to Dambulla
    Met at arrivals with your name on a sign, then north through coconut country. Evening free to shake off the flight.

  2. Day 2

    Sigiriya
    Pre-dawn climb of Lion Rock, ahead of both the heat and the tour buses. Dambulla's cave temples in the afternoon.

  3. Day 3

    Polonnaruwa
    The ruined medieval capital by bicycle or by vehicle — Gal Vihara, the Quadrangle and the royal palace.

  4. Day 4

    Anuradhapura
    The island's oldest capital and the sacred Bo tree, grown from a cutting brought here in the third century BC. South to Matale in the evening.

  5. Day 5

    Matale and Kandy
    A working spice garden, then into Kandy for evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth.

  6. Day 6

    Kandy
    Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, the lake, and a Kandyan dance performance after dark.

  7. Day 7

    Departure
    An unhurried drive to the airport, with stops along the way as your flight time allows.

When to go. Runs year-round. Yala's Block 1 usually closes for maintenance around September — we use Kumana or Lunugamvehera on those dates. Wild animals being wild, no sighting can be guaranteed.

  1. Day 1

    Airport to Sinharaja
    South-west into the last major stretch of primary rainforest left on the island.

  2. Day 2

    Sinharaja to Udawalawe
    A dawn walk with a local tracker for endemic birds, then east into elephant country.

  3. Day 3

    Udawalawe to Yala
    Morning safari among the herds and the feeding at the Elephant Transit Home, then on to Yala.

  4. Day 4

    Yala
    A full day in the park — leopard, sloth bear, crocodile, and birds in every direction.

  5. Day 5

    Bundala to Ella
    First light in the coastal lagoons for flamingo and waders, then the climb up into the tea hills.

  6. Day 6

    Ella train and departure
    The scenic rail leg through the estates before the drive to the airport.

Sacred Triangle & Hill Country

When to go. Runs year-round. The Kandy Esala Perahera falls in July or August only — on any other date we substitute an evening temple ceremony and the Kandyan dance show.

    Airport to Anuradhapura
    North to the sacred city, arriving for sunset among the great dagobas.

  2. Day 2

    Mihintale to Kandy
    A dawn climb at the birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism, then the drive south to Kandy.

  3. Day 3

    Kandy to Ella
    The Temple of the Tooth in the morning, then up into tea country as the air cools.

  4. Day 4

    Ella
    Nine Arches Bridge timed for a passing train, Little Adam's Peak, and Ella Rock for anyone who wants the longer walk.

  5. Day 5

    Ella to departure
    Down through the hills and across to the airport.

Southern Coast Escape

When to go. At its best November to April, when the south-west is calm and the blue whales come close inshore. Boat trips depend on the sea state on the day and sightings are never guaranteed.

  1. Day 1

    Airport to Galle
    Down the coast road, and a sunset walk on the Fort ramparts to start.

  2. Day 2

    Galle Fort
    The Dutch churches, the lighthouse and the old streets in the cool of the morning; Unawatuna beach after lunch.

  3. Day 3

    Mirissa
    An early boat out for blue whales and spinner dolphins. The rest of the day is yours.

  4. Day 4

    Weligama and Koggala
    A surf lesson on the beginners' break, then a lagoon and mangrove safari past the stilt fishermen.

  5. Day 5

    Departure
    The coast road back, with time for a last swim if the flight allows.

East Coast Paradise

When to go. Best May to September. The east coast runs on the opposite monsoon to the south, so this is the trip that works when Galle and Mirissa are wet.

    Pick-up to Trincomalee
    Across the island to the east coast, arriving for sunset at the cliff-top Koneswaram temple.

  2. Day 2

    Nilaveli and Pigeon Island
    A short boat to the marine national park for snorkelling over live reef, then the long white sand at Nilaveli.

  3. Day 3

    Trincomalee
    Marble Beach, the natural harbour, and the hot wells at Kanniya.

  4. Day 4

    Departure
    Return transfer to the airport, or carry on to anywhere else on the island.

Elephant Trail & Minneriya

When to go. The Gathering peaks July to October, when the reservoir draws hundreds of elephants onto the grassland. Outside that window we follow the herds to Kaudulla or Eco Park instead.

  1. Day 1

    Pick-up to Sigiriya
    Dambulla's cave temples on the way in, then the evening free.

  2. Day 2

    Sigiriya and the Gathering
    Lion Rock at sunrise, and an afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla, wherever the herds are that week.

  3. Day 3

    Village morning and departure
    A bullock cart ride, a lake crossing by catamaran and lunch cooked over a wood fire, then your onward transfer.
